About Us

The Canadian Institute for Information and Privacy Studies (CIIPS) exists to expand public knowledge of freedom of information and privacy issues in Canada. We achieve that through programs of research and education. We are a registered charitable organization.

We are not an activist organization but rather a “think tank” that advances knowledge about information issues and information rights through research and education.

CIIPS uses specific definitions of “freedom of information” and “privacy”.

Our Vision & Mission Statements

The CIIPS board of directors adopted Vision and Mission Statements in 2014.

Our Vision Statement
We envision a Canada where individuals and organizations enjoy the highest knowledge of access to information and privacy issues and people are able to reach their full potential as democratic citizens in today’s information environment.

Mission Statement
Through programs of research and education, we seek to increase public knowledge of access to information and privacy issues and enable individuals, communities and peoples to achieve their full potential as democratic citizens in today’s information environment.

Our Purposes

The Canadian Institute for Information and Privacy Studies Society (CIIPSS) is a national charitable organization incorporated under the Canada Not-For-Profit Corporations Act and registered with the Charities Directorate of Canada Revenue Agency.

The objects of the Corporation are the advancement of the education and knowledge of public access to information and privacy issues.

Our People

CIIPS depends on the work of volunteers, supporters, and partners, including our various boards and committees. Some of Canada’s leading researchers, educators, experts, practitioners, and entrepreneurs have stepped forward to support and volunteer at CIIPS. One of the side-effects of the work we do is the emergence of a community that crosses the boundaries of information, privacy, open government, open data, and media democracy sectors of our field.

We welcome volunteers for our boards, committees and other opportunities, as well as partnerships with academic institutions, fellows and researchers, non-profits, government agencies, and businesses—please contact us at Darrell@ciips.ca.
